(excerpt from artist’s statement by Rose Wedler)
"What if our friends the trees decided they had had enough..."
Artists from the North East region of Victoria respond to the theme of ‘environmental issues’ to create a range of works that express their views on our changing world, a constant topic of debate in recent times. These newly created art works explore the fragility of nature and the impact our way of life has on our environment. From the scarcity of water and the aftermath of fire, through to the selfishness of humanity and the degradation of the land through poor farming practices.

This exhibition brings together international artists to explore the complex and sometimes ambivalent relationship we have with local and international landscapes. The combined artworks investiage the shifting cultural significance of landscape from traditional concepts of nature to the socio-urban topography of contemporary identities. In effect, they reflext the collisions with technology and question how constructed environments are ordered and defined. Jillian Conrad re-presents an environment formed by layers of time, architectural choices and design opportunities, while Olivier Dollinger's video with surround sound is set in a cheap room on Hollywood Boulevard. Heeseop Yoon's installed drawings challenge the viewer's knowledge of spaces.

Forget Alcatraz...1876...Fremantle, Australia... The most daring prison breakout in history!
The true story of the whaling ship ,Catalpa, and her astonishing captain George Anthony has been described as one of the most extraordinary prison escapes of all time. It was a mission that spanned the globe and culminated in the rescue of six Irish political prisoners from Fremantle prison in 1876.
Donal O'Kelly's Catalpa is one of the most stunningly innovative pieces of Irish theatre in recent years. A frustrated, insomniac screenwriter acts out his un-filmed masterpiece entirely inside his own head. Becoming dozens of different characters, he brilliantly recreates this little known chapter of Australian convict history. It is a tale of daring, courage and loyalty, brought to life by word and sound alone.
Catalpa is performed by Des Fleming, directed by Alice Bishop, with original music and sound performed live by Wally Gunn.
