(excerpt from artist’s statement by Rose Wedler)

"What if our friends the trees decided they had had enough..."

Artists from the North East region of Victoria respond to the theme of ‘environmental issues’ to create a range of works that express their views on our changing world, a constant topic of debate in recent times. These newly created art works explore the fragility of nature and the impact our way of life has on our environment. From the scarcity of water and the aftermath of fire, through to the selfishness of humanity and the degradation of the land through poor farming practices.

This exhibition brings together international artists to explore the complex and sometimes ambivalent relationship we have with local and international landscapes.  The combined artworks investiage the shifting cultural significance of landscape from traditional concepts of nature to the socio-urban topography of contemporary identities.  In effect, they reflext the collisions with technology and question how constructed environments are ordered and defined.  Jillian Conrad re-presents an environment formed by layers of time, architectural choices and design opportunities, while Olivier Dollinger's video with surround sound is set in a cheap room on Hollywood Boulevard.  Heeseop Yoon's installed drawings challenge the viewer's knowledge of spaces.

Forget Alcatraz...1876...Fremantle, Australia... The most daring prison breakout in history!
The true story of the whaling ship ,Catalpa, and her astonishing captain George Anthony has been described as one of the most extraordinary prison escapes of all time. It was a mission that spanned the globe and culminated in the rescue of six Irish political prisoners from Fremantle prison in 1876.

Donal O'Kelly's Catalpa is one of the most stunningly innovative pieces of Irish theatre in recent years. A frustrated, insomniac screenwriter acts out his un-filmed masterpiece entirely inside his own head. Becoming dozens of different characters, he brilliantly recreates this little known chapter of Australian convict history. It is a tale of daring, courage and loyalty, brought to life by word and sound alone.

Catalpa is performed by Des Fleming, directed by Alice Bishop, with original music and sound performed live by Wally Gunn.

THE GRUFFALO by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler is one of the most popular story books in the world. Christine Dunstan Productions has reproduced the original London production by Tall Stories Theatre Company, a wonderful adaptation of the award winning picture book published by Macmillan Children's Books into a live musical play, which has played to West End and Broadway sell-out seasons.
Whether their favourite food is roasted fox, owl ice cream, scrambled snake or Gruffalo crumble, audiences eat up this delectable tale about the adventures of a clever little mouse in a forest full of predators. THE GRUFFALO follows Mouse into the deep dark wood on a lunchtime hunt for hazelnuts. Armed with just a nut map and a very vivid imagination, Mouse runs into the smirking, wheeler-dealer Fox; an eccentric, retired Woodland Air Force General Owl; and the maraca-shaking, party animal Snake. Rather than becoming the main course of their next meal, Mouse kills their appetites with stories of an imaginary monster friend. Little does this clever critter know but Mouse will have to escape the jaws of this faux protector as well. In a production that has become the toast of London's West End, Tall Stories vibrantly reinvents this delightful tale through its signature style of bold, multifaceted storytelling. This monster of a show beautifully captures the magic of Donaldson and Scheffler's adored "modern classic" (The Observer).

Your imagination will run wild with colourful characters, toe tapping sing-along songs, laughs and fun for children aged 3 and up, and their adults, when the Gruffalo and the Mouse commence their adventurous journey.
Suitable for ages 3 to 8 and their adults.
Show times: 12noon and 1:30pm

8pm Start

After a sell-out Melbourne International Comedy Festival run Mick Molloy, Glenn Robbins and Jeff Stilson are taking their hilarious show on the road! After years of TV, film and radio appearances, the three comedians have gone back to their roots - standing behind a microphone in front of a roomful of punters. Three men, a microphone and 90 minutes of some of Australia's best comedy.

Logie nominated Glenn Robbins has been acting and writing in comedy for well over 20 years. When he takes the stage you'll see a new side of the man best known for his time on The Comedy Company, Fast Forward, The Panel, Kath and Kim and most recently Out of the Question on Channel 7. Hosting the evening, Robbins will introduce two very different stand-up acts.

The enigmatic Mick Molloy is one of Australia's most successful and well-known comedians, often wearing the writer, actor and producer hat as well. Having been part of Martin/Molloy, The Late Show, Crackerjack and most recently Channel 10's Before the Game Mick will engage the audience with his witty banter and topical dissection of news.

Joining the familiar Robbins and Molloy on stage is international sensation Jeff Stilson. Familiar to local audiences through his many appearances on The Panel, Stilson has been nominated for 14 Emmy Awards (winning two) for comedy writing and producing and his twenty year stand up career has included regular appearances on Letterman, Conan and Jay Leno. Stilson brings a dry US wit to the stage with his stories of family, life and living in Australia.

This event is free to attend.

Obedience Trials showcase some of the smartest dogs you have ever seen as they take obedience way beyond the basic commands of sit and stay. Agility involves competitors directing their dogs around obstacle courses in an attempt to both negotiate the obstacles correctly and 'beat the clock'. Obstacles include jumps, ramps, elevated walks, poles that the dogs weave through, different types of tunnels and a see-saw.

One of the great things about the sports of Obedience and Agility is that any type of dog can participate.

We ask that you leave your own dog at home for this particular event but if you are interested in training in either of these disciplines, please speak to one of the club members at the event. Training and socialisation makes for happy dogs that are a positive part of the community.

Box Office open 10am - 4pm Monday-Friday. Phone: 03 5722 8105 Online: www.wangarattapac.com.au Tickets are also available from Edgars Newsagency at 55 Murphy Street, Wangaratta.

Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre and Wangaratta Arts Council Inc. are together pleased to present a winter series of concerts by local pianists. We have called the twilight concerts Steinway on Stage because the pianists will play the Rural City of Wangaratta's magnificent grand piano; and the audience will also be seated on the stage of the Alpine MDF Theatre.
Hour long concerts, arranged by Wangaratta Arts Council in Wangaratta Library when the Steinway was housed there while the Performing Arts Centre was being constructed, were very popular - so booking early for this winter series is strongly encouraged.
The final concert in the winter series will be presented by Sandra Williams. The program chosen for this performance mirrors all her musical loves: the classical favourites of her youth and beyond (with a distinct leaning to the Romantic period); jazz styles from Joplin to Brubeck; and music from the shows. Audiences first saw Sandra on the stage of the Alpine MDF Theatre (but not playing the glorious Steinway) when she was part of the band for Wangaratta Player's production of Cabaret. As a piano pupil at the Brigidine Convent in Beechworth, Sandra used to play in the Wangaratta eisteddfods when they were held in the Town Hall, so she is eager to play the Steinway now as a pianist. Sandra studied at the Melbourne Conservatorium, majoring in piano, and graduated with a Bachelor of Music, in 1970. She spent 3 years as a high school classroom music teacher; then became drawn to the new methods of teaching music to very young children such as those introduced from Japan, like the Suzuki and Yamaha methods. She joined the Yamaha Music Foundation's music teaching programme in Melbourne and enjoyed many years of working with groups of preschoolers, alongside their parents, in a vibrant learning environment. Eventually she was made Chief Instructor for Australia, which involved training teachers Australia-wide; and annual travels to Japan and South-East Asia to attend teacher -training Seminars and Concerts. Sandra's love of jazz grew after she moved to Sydney. In the 1980s she travelled to Jazz Festivals in Europe and the USA with jazz drummer legend, Len Barnard. She did lots of gigs as a keyboard player in bands. Other professional engagements include work as a syllabus writer and examiner for the Australian Music Examinations Board; adjudicator for various eisteddfods; and lecturer to tertiary students studying music teaching methods. Since returning in 2008 to live in Beechworth after retiring from teaching, Sandra delights in music-making as an accompanist for choirs and as musician in musicals. She also plays the organ for the Christ Church Anglican congregation as she did as a child.

Performance time: 6pm Please note this performance is General Admission and the audience will be seated on the stage.

FOX tells the fable like story of an unusual friendship between Dog and Magpie. Combining a haunting score and breathtaking physicality, this production will see the heart soar as friendship triumphs. Magpie is injured in a bushfire but she discovers that riding atop her friend, one-eyed Dog, as he runs through the bush, feels almost the same as flying. FLY, DOG, FLY! I will be your missing eye and you will be my wings. Fox arrives and tempts Magpie with an even faster ride. Desire, loyalty and friendship become confused and after an exhilarating ride, Fox dumps Magpie far out in the desert. Abandoned and alone Magpie begins the long journey home. In collaboration with Director Kate Gaul and Composer Daryl Wallis, Monkey Baa has created a theatrically inventive adaptation of this timeless fable by Margaret Wild and Ron Brooks. AN unforgettable experience that is as rich for adults as it is for young people. Beautiful, wild and heart-strong.

INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED UNASHAMEDLY RAUNCHY COMEDY Six women from diverse background meet on "ladies day" in a London bathhouse where they share the most intimate details of their lives, loves, dreams and frustrations. Steaming is the heart-warming, ribald classic by Nell Dunn.
The show is known for its razor-sharp, acerbic dialogue and YES, its nudity.
There's Violet who runs the bathhouse, always ready with a towel and a listening ear. Mrs Meadow (Val Lehman) and her daughter Dawn who are regular visitors, for their weekly bath. They have no electricity at home and look forward to their only outing. Jane and her friend Nancy went to school together and are now both separated from their husbands. Jane, a remnant of the 1960's, has left her husband and Nancy is an uptight organiser whose lawyer-husband left her. For a younger woman. Josie doesn't want to be like Nancy who she refers to as, "boring, boring, boring" and no one wants to be like Jane.
Josie (Alli Pope) is a colourful character who enjoys nothing better than sharing the details of her love life and fantasies, much to the bemusement and disgust of the other women. Her working-class background takes the hedonic lead in the fight against closure and is frankly spoken as she describes her pathetic and sometimes obsequious sexual dependency on men.
This play can be considered controversial because of the nudity. But, it's so much more than that - it's about friendship, finding your place in the world and fighting for what you believe in. Set in an old turkish bath somewhere in the East End of London where six women of all conditions come to bare their bodies, souls and fantasies. Steaming is a warm- hearted, often humorous portrayal of women coming to know each other. When they realise their 'sanctuary', their little bit of luxury, is about to be demolished by penny-pinching, self-aggrandising bureaucrats, they must unite and 'SAVE THE BATHS'.

The Cave To The Rave takes us from the earthen floor of prehistoric man to the polished parquetry of modern dance with a few side steps and knee slides along the way. It's a dance class for comedy beginners, intermediate and advanced. By the end of the session you will have learnt that it's not a good idea to crowd surf at a wiggles concert; understand why women dance in a circle around their handbags and learn that asking someone to dance in a lift is awkward even if there is music playing. Damian's highly choreographed tributes suspiciously funded fringe movement ensembles and 80's film clips and will have you laughing and wanting to dance with him. Make an orderly line. Circus Trick Tease is a raunchy, raucous and entertaining collection of misfits including a maladjusted sensitive strongman, his neurotic femme fatale and their internationally acclaimed super star. Together, they play out their chaotic roles in dazzling displays of acrobatics, precarious balances, gratuitous headstands and a human skipping rope. Watch as this tight-knit unit comes undone and backstage antics erupt into recrimination & full blown fisticuffs. The only thing that holds them together is an understanding that the show must go on. Circus Trick Tease takes elements of traditional circus and incorporates comedy, satire, drama, love, and of course jaw dropping tricks of strength, poise and flexibility. The group will dazzle any audience as they balance effortlessly on each other?s hands, head and feet. They strive to overcome the barriers of gender, race, ego and ability while maintaining the principle that the show must always go on. From the company and director of the 2007 hit tour, The Memory of Water. A Day In The Death of Joe Egg is part vaudeville, part tragedy and part comedy... but always courageous and heartfelt. A thought-provoking and very funny modern classic, that holds a justified place in London's National Theatre's list of the most significant plays of the twentieth century. 'It's glorious theatre. Without doubt it's a beautifully crafted work, wonderfully staged and directed.' -Sydney Stage Online. A Day in The Death of Joe Egg is the story of a young married couple, Bri (Brian) and Sheila. Bri really should have been an entertainer of some sort. He could have been a writer, a stand up comedian, a star of the silver screen. Sharp witted and able to turn the toughest of situations into a stand up comedy routine, life with Bri is always entertaining. However Bri isn't living the dream. Bri and Shelia, though a young and fun loving couple, are struggling not to give way to the pressures of caring for their disabled daughter, Joe, nicknamed 'Joe Egg'. One night it all comes to a fateful climax with the visit of unwanted friends, with their unwanted advice and help, and Bri's clever and funny lounge room antics becoming more and more revealing. Peter Nichols' reminds us that it takes bravery and courage to face life's adversities and that if you don't laugh, you'll cry. 'Kim Hardwick's sensitive direction, together with excellent performances from Gavin and Davis makes for gripping theatre.' -Sunday Telegraph 'Director Kim Hardwick has got this just right...this is a handsomely produced show with designer Alexandra Sommer employing the now-trendy Parker-Knoll vibe without going over the top. Phillip Scott's score of disintegrating Christmas carols is very effective and Martin Kinnane's lighting cues add a gentle pulse to the drama.' -The Sun Herald Featuring an exceptional ensemble cast: Genevieve Mooy (Frontline, The Dish, Brides of Christ), Jonathan Gavin (2 Pianos 4 Hands), Julia Davis(Bell Shakespeare, Wilde Tales), Drew Fairley (Bangers and Mash), Katrina Retallick (Comedy Inc, Crackerjack, South Pacific, Grease) and Sophie Webb (The Jungle). The 50km option will take cyclists from Glenrowan to Greta, Moyhu and back to the town, made famous by the Kelly Gang’s Last Stand.

Following months of planning by a dedicated team from the Wangaratta BUGS and Northeast Health Wangaratta we are ready to deliver a first class cycling event offering fabulous scenery and a safe-cycling environment. Against the backdrop of the picturesque Kelly Country, the event promises to be a major attraction for cycling enthusiasts.

All proceeds from the ride will go towards our local hospital, Northeast Health Wangaratta to ensure high levels of quality care continue to be provided to our local community.

TaikOz - Blessings of the Earth Blessings Of The Earth features the full range of TaikOz?s dynamic taiko drums ? including the 250kg ?daiko Grand Drum ? as well as a solo dance, Solo from Kaidan: A Ghost Story, choreographed by the internationally acclaimed Meryl Tankard. The performance also features beautiful melodies for the bamboo flutes, as well as traditional and contemporary songs. As with all TaikOz performances, Blessings Of The Earth can be enjoyed by all ages. ?Taiko? is the Japanese word for ?drum? and TaikOz is Australia?s leading taiko drumming group. However, a TaikOz performance is more than just the beating of drums: it incorporates a complete world of drumming, song and dance that on the one hand harks back to ancient Buddhist and Shinto rituals and on the other, is a reflection of contemporary musical life, irrespective of nationality. While once a uniquely Japanese art form, its transformation into an international language is a recent phenomenon and one in which TaikOz is very much at the forefront. A TaikOz performance is not just for the ears and the eyes, but is felt throughout the entire body. It is a truly visceral experience. Now in its thirteenth year, the group?s passionate dedication to the art of taiko, as well as its desire to create new music for today?s audiences, has ensured that TaikOz remains a truly unique musical ensemble with a distinctively Australian repertoire. Described by The Sydney Morning Herald as ?bold and original?, TaikOz is best known for blending East and West, old and new.
