CyclingWangaratta and surrounds offers a wide range of cycling opportunities and because of the topography of the countryside it is the perfect destination to explore on your bike. Residents have embraced a cycling culture and the township boasts gold medal winning cyclists Glenn Clark and Dean Woods.
However you don't have to be an elite cyclist to enjoy the many tracks and paths that exist in and around Wangaratta and surrounding areas. Whether it is the wineries, bakeries, the exhilaration of mountain bike rides, scenic bike paths or exploratory rides to small historic towns, Wangaratta has it all within easy reach.
The township of Wangaratta is intersected by the One Mile Creek. Running parrallel with the creek is the One Mile Creek Bike Path that offers a lovely scenic ride or walk from one side of town to the other (approx 15kms). You could also ride from the Showgrounds and follow the Ovens River to a popular swimming hole - the Northern Beaches. (approx 3kms). The Yarrawonga Rd bike path is an extension of the One Mile Creek Path and is also a popular ride - the terrain is flat and the scenery delightful.
Other bike paths are located from the Glenrowan Tourist Park into the Glenrowan township and between Oxley and Milawa.
On Sunday 16th May 2011, the Wangaratta to Oxley trail (10kms) was officially opened. This trail links the existing One Mile Creek bike path and the Milawa Trail to create a gourmet cycling experience from the Wangaratta Train Station through the heart of the Milawa Gourmet Region. For those wishing to complete a loop back to Wangaratta on the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail via Everton, just follow the blue markers posts from the Milawa Gourmet Hotel along sealed country roads.
If you would like to join in an organised ride whilst in the area the local Bicycle Users' Group, or BUGs as they are known, welcome visitors to join their regular rides throughout the month. You can pick up a copy of these ride guides from the Visitor Information Centre or download from here.
If you would like to explore further afield, pick up a copy of the Ride Guide - Cyclist Guide to North East Victoria. Wangaratta is a wonderfully central location to base yourself for a cycling holiday. The Murray to Mountains Rail Trail starts here and is a 94 kilometre trail that follows the old railway track through spectacular and diverse scenery from Wangaratta to Bright with a loop to Beechworth if desired. You can ride sections of the Trail depending upon your level of fitness or do some of the scenic side rides.
Bikes are available for hire in Wangaratta and there are services to pick up tired cyclists along the route by arrangement - see the Cycling Services page.
