Cycling

Wangaratta and surrounds offers a wide range of cycling opportunities and because of the topography of the countryside it is the perfect destination to explore on your bike. Residents have embraced a cycling culture and the township boasts a gold medal Olympian in Dean Woods.

The Bicycle Users’ Group or BUGs as they are known locally, organise a number of rides throughout the year and are more than happy to advise visiting cyclists. They have published a comprehensive ride guidebook detailing twenty-two local rides. Grab a copy from the Wangaratta Visitor Information Centre or any of the local bike shops in Wangaratta.

Wangaratta is also the start of the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail. The 94 kilometre Trail follows the old railway track through spectacular and diverse scenery from Wangaratta to Bright with a loop to Beechworth if desired. You can ride sections of the Trail depending upon your level of fitness. Bikes are available for hire in Wangaratta and there are services to pick up tired cyclists along the route by arrangement.

It is a pleasant and easy ride out to the Milawa Gourmet Region.
