Driving Conditions
Driving in the Winter
Snow clearing equipment is used during the winter snow season ensuring that the Great Alpine Road is open and clear providing all year round access. By law, snow chains must be carried during the snow season (June long weekend - approx 4 October) and fitted when directed. When travelling on snow and ice you should use lower gears, especially on steep down grade, brake slowly and early. Don't brake around corners.
Check your fuel, oil, tyres and anti freeze before you go as there are limited services at the ski resorts.
You should also be prepared for potential fog, ice show and strong winds during these months.
Please check the weather/snow conditions on the official Victorian Snow Report website
Driving in the National Parks
Before you go driving in the National Parks please check the Parks Victoria website for road conditions and closures.
