Golf and Fitness

Sport in Wangaratta is like a religion!  For those who like to be active Wangaratta is home to first rate sporting facilities and plays host to numerous sporting championship titles throughout the year including swimming, tennis, basketball, cycling, racquetball and much more.

Whether you want to go swimming, golfing, cycling, bowling, pump some iron, have a hit of tennis or squash, watch a footy game or much more, Wangaratta caters for the lot.

Golfers are spoilt in Wangaratta with two excellent golf courses, Wangaratta Golf Club and Jubilee Golf Club,  both offer a great golfing experience.  Wangaratta Golf Club is 4km from the city centre set on the grounds of the Historic Waldara Homestead (built in 1886) and Jubilee Golf Club is 10km from the city centre at the foot of the Warby Ranges National Park.   Smaller regional hamlets within the Rural City of Wangaratta also have their own golf courses, including Tarrawingee, Boorhaman and Whitfield.  

If you are visiting Wangaratta don't let your fitness regime slide.  Wangaratta has several gyms and activity groups open to visitors.  The Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre has excellent facilities including a full gymnasium, swimming pool, squash/raquetball courts, aerobics classes, water aerobics, spin classes, basketball, netball and tennis courts.  Wangaratta Lawn Tennis Club offer excellent tennis courts right in the heart of Wangaratta, in the picturesque Merriwa Park.  They play host to many tournaments, competitions, coaching and social tennis.  Visitors welcome!

Several activities groups including the Wangaratta Bicylce Users Group (BUG's) and the Wangaratta Out & About Club welcome visitors to join their regular bike rides and bushwalks.

Swimming is a favourite pastime in the region.  Wangaratta is fortunate to be on the junction of two rivers; The Ovens River and The King River.  These rivers both offer great swimming, fishing and campings opportunities.  In summer, there is also the outdoor pools - The Olympic Swimming Pool and the Yarrunga Pool.  Year round the swimming is possible at the Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre and a Moore Than Swimming Pool.

Cycling in many styles is another popular activity.  The slightly undulating terrain of our area lends itself to excellent road cycling.  The Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail, an 83km bike path from Wangaratta to Bright, with a leg up to Beechworth is a spectacular, popular and rewarding ride. Mountainbiking in the Warby Ranges National Park is becoming increasingly popular.

If walking is more your style, you are spoilt with choice in the Wangaratta area.  Within the town there is the lovely track following the One Mile Creek that criss crosses east to west of the town.  There is also the Northern Beaches river walk that starts at the Wangaratta Showgrounds and follows the Ovens River to get to the popular swimming/fishing spot known as the Northern Beaches.   Walking on the Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail is also popular.  Bushwalking in the Warby Ranges National Park offers the rewards of great views, glimpes of native wildlife and wildflowers.
