The Great Outdoors

Our region offers fantastic opportunities to experience the Great Outdoors!   A land of breathtaking views, spectacular rock formations, cascading waterfalls,  wildflowers awaits visitors.  

Wangaratta is known as the gateway to the high country, and as such offers easy access to spectacular State and National parks, includings the Warby Ranges State Park and the Wobonga Plateau (part of the Alpine National Park). 

Walking
In and around Wangaratta there is a network of paths and trails that link the waterways, historic buildings and parks.  The One Mile/Three Mile Creek walking/cycling path runs north to south through town along the creek.  The Wangaratta Heritage Walk which showcases the historic sites around the town enables you to experience a range of neo-Romanesque, Norman and Gothic architecture. 
Bushwalking is a popular pastime in the region with locals and visitors alike enjoying easy access to the nearby Warby Ranges State Park and the Alpine National Park.  

Cycling
Wangaratta region is a cyclists mecca, offering ideal topography and climate.  Wangaratta is the start of the Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail.   The 94 km trail follows the old railway track through spectacular and diverse scenery from Wangaratta to Bright with a side trip to Beechworth.  More information about the Murray to the Mountain Rail trail can be found at www.murraytomountains.com.au

The gentle gradient of the surrounding area also offers wonderful road cycling, with the opportunity to pass through some lovely scenery, characteristic townships and local food and wine producers.  

Camping
We are fortunate in our region that there are a number of excellent camping spots alongside mountain streams and rivers where you can relax, unwind and perhaps catch a trout. 
These include the Ovens Billabong, River Road Reserve, Frosts Reserve and Pioneer Bridges which are all along the Ovens River.  Alternatively, you can make your way to the Edi Cutting in the King Valley and camp by the King River. 
The Warby Ranges State Park also has a wonderful open bush camp site called Wenhams Camp with toilets and is also the start of the Friends walking track.  Click here to download the camping fact sheet.

If bush camping is not your style, there are numerous caravan parks in the area offering all the facilities that you might need.   There are three caravan parks in Wangaratta and one in Glenrowan, Eldorado, Milawa, Everton, Moyhu, Edi and Whitfield.

Four Wheel Driving
With easy access to many four wheel driving tracks it is no wonder that it is a popular activity in the area.  A short drive from Whitfield, there is some excellent four wheel drive tracks in the Alpine National Park.  Some popular sites include Mt Cobbler, Sandy Flat, Top Crossing Hut, The Razorback, Lake Cobbler and Mt Speculation.  Click here to download the Parks VIC notes for the area.

Powers Lookout - located on the Whitfield Mansfield Rd this excellent vantage point was so named as it was the haunt of the "Gentleman Bushranger" Harry Power.   From the main road it is a 3km trip along a gravel road to reach the lookout that offers spectacular views over the Wabonga Plateau and Mt Cobbler to the southeast.  There are picnic tables and fireplaces at the lookout.
Lake William Hovell - just 18km from Cheshunt offers a picturesque recreational area perfect for  BBQ's walking and fishing.

Kaluna Park - natural bushland walk adjacent to Merriwa Park

Northern Beaches - Oven's River Walk from the Wangaratta Showgrounds to popular swimming hole
Yarrawonga Road cycle walking path - approx 12km

Siege Site Walk - pick up a brochure and follow what happened where during the Kelly Gang siege at Glenrowan
Winton Wetlands - Lake Mokoan is being decomissioned and is being reverted back to a natural wetlands
