The Forest Camp

Wangandary Road, Wangandary, 3678

The peaceful Killawarra Forest Camp was the site of a Forest Commission camp in the Depression of the 1930s. During World War II it was turned into an internment camp for Italian immigrants. The area was heavily logged, but a few large old trees can still be found among the regrowth, providing important habitat and nesting hollows for a diverse range of Box Ironbark birds and other animals.

The campsite has toilets, picnic tables, and fire places with grills. The individual unpowered sites are suitable for tents and caravans.

Campers must be self-sufficient and bring their own drinking water. Please take your rubbish home for recycling or disposal.

Fires are permitted for cooking and warmth in the fireplaces provided, if: it is not a day of Total Fire Ban, a three-metre area around it is cleared of anything flammable, an adult is in attendance at all times and at least 10 litres of water are available for immediate use. Put the fire out with water, not soil. When the campfire is cool to touch, it is safe to leave.
