Winter

Winter

Winter is certainly not a time for the region to sleep with many people enjoying the 'hygge' or cosiness that the region embraces in its cooler months. Curl up in front of a fireplace, or explore the Wangaratta Art Gallery which presents a diverse visual arts program of national, state and regional exhibitions - there is sure to be something to keep you entertained!

Warm your soul and enjoy one of the many culinary delights from Riverside dining in the CBD or nestle in front of a fireplace with a delicious glass of wine at one of our picturesque wineries, while watching the fog lift over the vines and mountain backdrops.

If you are after a 'cooler' experience, why not drive the Great Alpine Road – stretching more than 300 kilometres from Wangaratta to Bairnsdale, it is one of Australia's classic touring routes. The Great Alpine Road is fully sealed and is open all year, however the snow bunny in us all will jump with joy as the snow capped mountains bring an extra level of excitement to this adventure in winter.  Expect snow and ice in winter and snow chains must be carried during the official now season. At the end of the day, check into one of our country cottages, many boasting an open fire in the winter, creating the perfect spot to put your feet up and relax as you reflect on your day.

Head down to Glenrowan Recreational Reserve Lake and cast a line here where 600 advanced Rainbow Trout yearlings are stocked each June and September for the school holidays, Rainbow trout are a good option for children or those trying fishing for the first time, because they are relatively easy to catch and take a variety of baits and lures.

The cooler days and welcome rainfall make the Warby Ovens National Park the perfect adventure playground, from chasing waterfalls to taking advantage of the perfect conditions to shred the mountain bike trails including the popular Friends Track or enjoying snow capped vistas on a clear day from the Alpine Views Walk.
