Discover Wangaratta's Hidden History
The Wangaratta Historical Society brings the stories of our region to life through guided tours led by knowledgeable local historians. Our tours go beyond the guidebook — uncovering the layered past of this remarkable community, from its deep First Nations heritage and colonial beginnings, to the industries and characters that shaped the city we know today. Whether you're a lifelong local or visiting for the first time, you'll leave with a richer understanding of what makes Wangaratta truly unique.
Our tours run regularly throughout the year and are open to the public, with bookings essential and places strictly limited to ensure an intimate, engaging experience. The Society has a proud record of bringing Wangaratta's history to life in unexpected places — past tours of the iconic Wangaratta Woollen Mills proved enormously popular, a testament to the strong community appetite for connecting with the region's industrial and cultural heritage. Watch this space for new tour offerings as they are announced.
The walk concludes near the Wangaratta Historical Society Museum — the perfect way to round out your morning. Step inside to explore the Society's collections and deepen your connection with the stories you've just heard on the streets. Afterwards, the city centre is right on your doorstep if you'd like to find a café and continue the conversation over coffee. Please come prepared for the weather: wear sun protection, dress comfortably, and bring water if needed
