From bushranger legends to vineyard lunches, this three-day journey blends history, gourmet experiences, and scenic beauty. 

 

Getting There & Travel Tips 

Wangaratta is just a 2.5 to 3-hour drive from Melbourne via the Hume Freeway. With Glenrowan, Milawa, and King Valley all within 30–45 minutes, it’s the ideal base for relaxed day trips. 

Midweek Travel Tips: 

  • Enjoy quieter cellar doors and peaceful trails. Midweek means fewer crowds. 

  • Pack walking shoes for short hikes and scenic lookouts. 

  • Book ahead for winery lunches and accommodation, especially in smaller towns. 

 

Day 1 – Wangaratta & Glenrowan: Art, History & Heritage 

Ease into your escape with a morning in Wangaratta. Start at the Wangaratta Visitor Information Centre for maps and insider tips, then wander over to the Wangaratta Art Gallery, a tranquil space showcasing regional and contemporary works. 

Stretch your legs along the riverside trails or Bullawah Cultural Trail before heading to Glenrowan, just 20 minutes (17 km) away. Grab lunch at a local café, then dive into the legend of Ned Kelly at the Ned Kelly Discovery Hub. Explore immersive displays and walk the Siege Precinct Trail, where history comes alive. 

Return to Wangaratta for the evening. Choose from boutique motels, cosy B&Bs, or caravan parks with all the comforts.

Day 2 – King Valley: Wine, Waterfalls & Italian Charm 

Today is all about indulgence and scenery. Head to King Valley, just 30–45 minutes from Wangaratta, and begin with a tasting at Sam Miranda Wines, known for its striking cellar door and Italian varietals. 

Continue to Dal Zotto Wines or Pizzini Wines, where warm hospitality and crisp Prosecco await. Book a winery lunch and dine among the vines, think fresh pasta, local produce, and a glass of something special. 

In the afternoon, explore the valley’s natural wonders: 

  • Powers Lookout – a historic hideout with panoramic views. 
    Distance: 20 min from Whitfield. Free entry. 

  • Paradise Falls – a short walk to a stunning 31-metre waterfall. 
    Distance: 15 min from Cheshunt + 10 min walk. Free entry. 

  • Lake William Hovell – a peaceful spot for reflection or a picnic. 
    Distance: 20 min from Cheshunt. No booking required. 

Dinner Tip: Book a table at the Mountain View Hotel in Whitfield for farm-to-table dining paired with local wines makes for a perfect end to your day.

Day 3 – Milawa: Gourmet Tastes & Scenic Trails 

Start your final day with coffee in Wangaratta, then hit the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail, a scenic cycling route through farmland and vineyards to Milawa (18 km one way). Bike hire is available. 

Once in Milawa, indulge in a progressive tasting tour: 

  • Milawa Cheese Company – sample the famous King River Gold.
