Reconnect, unwind, and indulge in the beauty of North East Victoria. This three-day escape is designed for couples seeking quiet moments, gourmet experiences, and breathtaking scenery.

Getting There & Travel Tips

Wangaratta is just a 2.5 to 3-hour drive from Melbourne via the scenic Hume Freeway. Your first stop, Milawa, is only 20 minutes (17 km) from Wangaratta, with King Valley and Beechworth also within 30–45 minutes, making it easy to explore without long drives.

Couples Travel Tips:

  • Book winery tastings and dining in advance—especially for weekends.

  • Choose romantic accommodation—think vineyard stays, boutique cottages, or luxury B&Bs.

  • Pack a camera—sunsets, cellar doors, and waterfalls make for stunning memories.

  • Bring a picnic blanket—perfect for spontaneous stops in scenic spots.

Day 1 – Arrival in Wangaratta & Exploring the Region

Your romantic escape begins in Wangaratta, where the pace slows and the scenery opens up. First stop: the Wangaratta Visitor Information Centre. Friendly staff greet you with maps, insider tips, and suggestions tailored to your interests—whether it’s wine, food, or history.

From there, wander over to the Wangaratta Art Gallery, a peaceful space filled with contemporary and regional artworks. Stroll hand-in-hand through the exhibits, sharing thoughts and soaking in the creative energy.

By midday, head to King River Café in Oxley for a relaxed lunch. The menu features fresh, locally sourced produce, and the quiet garden setting is perfect for couples looking to unwind.

After lunch, make your way into the King Valley. A short walk down the hillside stairs to Paradise Falls offers a tranquil escape—this 31-metre waterfall is surrounded by lush forest and birdsong. It’s a gentle 45-minute walk, ideal for reconnecting with nature and each other.

Next, visit Pizzini Wines, where Italian-style wines and warm hospitality await. Sip Prosecco, stroll the vineyard, and take in the views. Before heading to your accommodation, stop by the Cheshunt General Store to pick up fresh Bread, local meats, and produce—perfect for a quiet evening in.

Your retreat for the night is one of the region’s quaint cottages or a fully self-contained vineyard stay, where you can enjoy privacy, comfort, and stunning views. Whether it’s a cozy cottage tucked into the hills or a luxurious house overlooking the vines, you’ll find the perfect setting to unwind. Soak in the outdoor bathtub with a glass of wine as the sun sets or curl up by the wood fire in your suite. With your picnic supplies ready, enjoy a peaceful evening surrounded by nature.

Day 2 – Gourmet Delights in Milawa

Rise early for a magical start to the day with Gold Rush Hot Air Ballooning. Float above the King Valley as the sun rises, casting golden light over vineyards and rolling hills. After landing, toast the experience with a celebratory glass of champagne.

Next, head to Brown Brothers Winery for a leisurely brunch. Share a seasonal platter paired with their famous Prosecco, and relax in the beautiful garden setting.

Spend the rest of the day grazing your way through Milawa. Start at the Milawa Cheese Company, sampling their signature King River Gold washed rind cheese. Then visit Wood Park Wines for a tasting of unique varietals like roussanne and zinfandel.

Continue your flavour journey at Milawa Mustards, where you can try everything from sweet to fiery blends. Then head to Hurdle Creek Still for a gin tasting—many of their spirits feature native botanicals grown on-site.

For lunch, settle in at Sam Miranda Winery, one of the King Valley’s finest. Enjoy seasonal dishes made with local ingredients, paired with estate-grown wines in a relaxed, elegant setting.

After a restful afternoon, return to your vineyard accommodation or country cottage to freshen up before dinner. These romantic stays offer everything you need—space to relax, scenic views, and the quiet charm of the countryside.

Head out for dinner at The Mountain View Hotel in Whitfield. Known for its farm-to-table dining and cozy atmosphere, it’s the perfect spot to end the day with a romantic meal.

Late morning, take a short drive to Brookfield Maze, where you can wander through the hedge maze or explore the gardens. After your adventure, enjoy lunch at the Brookfield Café, featuring homemade treats and local wines.

In the afternoon, return to Wangaratta and visit Art On Ovens Gallery, a quiet space showcasing local and regional art. Walk through the exhibits hand-in-hand, reflecting on your shared experience.

As the day winds down, head to Warby Ovens National Park for a sunset picnic. Find a quiet spot with panoramic views and watch the sky change colours over the mountains and plains.

Finish your getaway with a romantic dinner at Watermarc Wangaratta, one of the region’s premier dining spots. With a modern Australian menu and elegant ambiance, it’s the perfect setting for a final toast to your time together.
